The-Dream Responds to Sexual Assault Lawsuit, Seeks to Strike Rape and Sex Trafficking Claims
The-Dream has responded to a recent sexual assault lawsuit with a motion to dismiss the case and eliminate portions of the victim's claims.
Court records indicate that The-Dream’s legal team is requesting several modifications to the lawsuit. In June, Chanaaz Mangroe accused the artist of rape, sexual battery, and sex trafficking, citing California's Sexual Abuse and Cover-Up Accountability Act.
The motion seeks to dismiss Mangroe’s allegations of rape and sex trafficking and to remove 300 paragraphs from the case that the defense argues are "irrelevant." Additionally, The-Dream's attorneys are pushing to exclude his label, Contra Paris, LLC, from the lawsuit, stating that it is based in Delaware, not California.
"The Complaint is a prime example of 'shotgun pleading' and should be dismissed in its entirety for failing to specify factual allegations against each defendant," stated Dream’s lawyer, Desirée F. Moore. "The Plaintiff’s Complaint includes numerous accusations that have no relevance to her claims of sexual battery and sex trafficking, and seem intended only to tarnish Diamant’s name and reputation."
According to the filing, The-Dream and his attorneys claim that Mangroe’s legal strategy is "using the court system to spread a false and defamatory narrative about Diamant, a highly-respected Black artist, for financial gain and at great personal cost to him—and to the detriment of his career and legacy as a musician and a prominent Black figure that inspires current and future generations in the arts."
The motion also asserts that the relationship between The-Dream and Mangroe was consensual, claiming that Mangroe initiated the interactions and that after they mutually ended the relationship, Mangroe allegedly continued to pursue The-Dream.
"The-Dream’s attempts to dismiss the Plaintiff’s claims are completely unfounded," responded Mangroe’s legal team. "We are eager to challenge these motions and move forward with the discovery process."
Moore, The-Dream’s attorney, also stated that the motion was filed after unsuccessful attempts to reach a settlement with Mangroe’s representatives.
Mangroe, who performs under the name Chanii Monroe, alleges that she was coerced into having sex with The-Dream on multiple occasions. She claims they first met in 2014, when The-Dream promised to make her as famous as Beyoncé or Rihanna, but their relationship allegedly became abusive.
