Matthew Morgan is challenging expectations with “Right Back Down” [PREMIERE]

In today's music industry, it can be incredibly challenging for emerging artists to break through the conventional system.

This is what makes an artist like Matthew Morgan stand out so profoundly. As an openly queer artist, Matthew is committed to crafting songs that resonate with a wide audience, offering empathy and insight into the often overlooked aspects of everyday life. Now, Matthew returns with his latest single and music video, "Right Back Down."

Produced by Brian Skeel, "Right Back Down" is Morgan's sharp critique of the cynical and unfulfilling nature of modern office work. While his previous album, Timepiece, offered a heartfelt reflection on the struggles of being a musician during the COVID-19 pandemic, this new track shifts focus. It delves into the everyday challenges of balancing work and life in a capitalistic society.

In the pursuit of the so-called "American dream," many people have found themselves trapped in monotonous office routines, and "Right Back Down" serves as a defiant commentary against this accepted norm. As Morgan puts it, "The song is a stark and painfully relatable depiction of how so many of us spend most of our waking hours in the office."

The Official Video for "Right Back Down" tackles this issue head-on. Directed by Meshach Malley and produced by Gentle Embers Media, the video pays homage to the 1999 cult classic Office Space with various visual nods. The video portrays Morgan having a bleak day at work, which escalates into a violent daydream where he wreaks havoc on office equipment, symbolizing pent-up frustration.

Designed to look bleak and colorless, the video authentically captures the oppressive environment of many modern workplaces, perfectly complementing the themes explored in the song.

Morgan's musical journey began with The Lost Brigade, where he had the opportunity to open for Dave Davies (The Kinks) and Company of Thieves at Chicago’s Taste of Lincoln Ave. However, seeking a more personal sound, he eventually left the band to pursue a solo career.

Between Timepiece and "Right Back Down," Morgan has refined a unique Americana and indie-folk sound that gives space for his introspective lyrics and emotional vocal performances.

Reflecting on the gap between the "American dream" and the reality of modern office life, Morgan quips, "If I had a dollar for every time I had a similar experience to what’s in the video or Office Space, I wouldn’t need to work in an office."

With "Right Back Down," Matthew Morgan embarks on a new chapter in his career, blending fresh musical styles with the same themes that have earned him recognition as a talented singer-songwriter.
